I combed my hair and just finished shaving. It was getting close to supper time and the
wood splitting was done for the day. The
kids were visiting Grandma and I was on my own for supper. I decided that instead of making something, I’d
pick up some Chinese food at the local restaurant. I called in an order.
I get to the restaurant to pick up my order and who do I
meet, also waiting for his order, Fr. Gilles.
He’s the priest at the church that I belonged to as a kid. Although I don’t attend anymore, I sure do
like Fr. Gilles, as I think he’s one of those genuine people who are so
rare. I respect him a great deal. He does much for our community. I have no beef with him. I do have a beef with the organization he
belongs to though. That is something to
talk about another day. He asks about
Bailey and Jackson. He did much for them
in hard times. He is a good man.
My order is up and I approach the cash register. The girl behind the counter is maybe 30, and
terribly cute. I get to the register and
she looks up at me with the broadest smile I’ve seen regard me in a long
while. She gives me the total and I
offer her my debit card. She seems unable
to take her eyes off me, all the while smiling.
I complete the transaction and thank her for the food. I make my way back to the van thinking pretty
well of myself. I think maybe I still
got it, so to speak.
I place the food on the passenger seat, and adjust the
rearview mirror to take in what the cute cashier must have enjoyed. Filling the mirror was a booger the size of a
half eaten sandwich hanging in my nostril.....
I don’t have it anymore......the booger, that is....
